File upload in IE11 on Windows Phone 8.1

Windows Phone 8 made building feature-rich HTML5 sites and applications forĀ easier than ever because it included IE10 as the browser and rendering engine. In fact, the features that help give Internet Explorer its fast and fluid performance (including the blazing fast JavaScript engine) work the same way in both the browser and any application that uses the WebBrowser control.

However, IE10 on WP8 didn’t support *everything* that IE10 on Windows 8 did. You can see a list of those differences here. Specifically related to this post, IE10 does not support file upload via <input type='file'> or File access APIs.

Good news!
<input type=’file’> is supported in IE11 on WP8.1

You can see from the screenshots below that I’m able to choose an existing photo, take a new photo, or go into the phone’s file system. Currently you can select from items in pictures, music, videos, documents, downloads, and ringtones.
