Project My Screen
Windows Phone 8.1 comes with a new “Project My Phone” feature built into the OS. In fact, notice that the interaction is two-way! Meaning, I can actually use my touchscreen PC to navigate on my phone. I imagine this could be useful for some app testing scenarios.
In order to use it, you’ll need to connect your phone (running WP8.1, obviously) using a micro-USB cable.
You’ll also need to install the Project My Screen app via this installer: http://download.microsoft.com/download/A/2/7/A271EFFF-6C9E-4E9B-9259-0F72FDEDD153/ProjectMyScreenApp.msi. Click run, accept the terms, and click OK through the prompts to install it in the default location.
Once installed, simply start the app with your phone connected via USB.
Your phone should prompt you to begin projection. Click “yes” and it should work! Congrats and happy demoing.
Help! It’s not working!
If your phone does not prompt to allow screen project, make sure you’re plugged in when you start the app. If that doesn’t work, you may need to re-install the phone’s drivers since they updated under WP8.1. The easiest way to do this is to go to Devices and Printers, right click on your phone under Devices and choose Remove Device.
